mailto links in Firefox

Q. When I click an email address link on a web page to send a new message on my PC, Firefox tries to open the separate mail program I never use, instead of switching to the Gmail page I have open in another tab and creating the new message there. Can I fix this?

A. Firefox looks for the computer’s default mail application when you click a “mailto” link on a webpage or email message. If you find the program is opening Windows Mail, Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird or another stand-alone mail program instead of the mail service you use through your browser (like Gmail or Yahoo Mail), you just have to change a Firefox setting.
To change the default mail program Firefox opens, click the three-lined Menu button in the top-right corner of the browser window and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac). On the left side of the next screen, click Applications. In the Content Type list in the middle of the screen, scroll down and select “mailto” and in the Actions drop-down menu next to it, choose Gmail. The next time you click an address to compose a note, Firefox should pop open a New Message form in your Gmail window.
Google Chrome has its own setting you can adjust. If your browser’s settings do not give you the option to choose a web mail service as your default mail program, a browser add-on might work. For example, the Google Toolbar extension for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser allows you to open “mailto” links with Gmail. A free extension for the Chrome browser called Mailto: for Gmail is another way to pop open a fresh Gmail message when you click an address link.

Dual boot Apple OS

Install Windows 10 on Your Mac

In the steps below, we'll use Boot Camp Assistant to create a bootable USB drive and install Windows 10 on a new partition. Then you'll be able to choose which OS you want to use whenever you start the Mac up.

1. Download the Windows 10 ISO disk image from Microsoft using this link. Choose the 64-bit version of Windows. Also, some people, including myself, have gotten an error message if the ISO image is saved to your default Downloads folder, so save the ISO image to your Documents folder or somewhere else to avoid problems.

2. Open Boot Camp Assistant. You'll find this in the Utilities folder or you can hit CMD + Spacebar to search for "Boot Camp Assistant."

Apple OS on USB drive

Apple has included a terminal command that can create an install disk for you. Assuming that you have the macOS Sierra installer in your Applications folder and you have a Mac OS Extended (Journaled)-formatted USB drive named "Untitled" mounted on the system, you can create a Sierra install drive by typing the following command into the Terminal.

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app --nointeraction

The command will erase the disk and copy the install files over. Give it some time, and your volume will soon be loaded up with not just the macOS installer but also an external recovery partition that may come in handy if your hard drive dies and you're away from an Internet connection.

Using gmail as default email client - Apple OS

Need to set mail to open google mail:  (also see stackexchange)

This only means email will open by default in another email client. If you want mailto: links to open in Gmail on Safari or Chrome or any other browser, however, then doing this won’t work. You actually have to cut out Mail altogether and make the changes to the browser itself.
On Chrome, it’s incredibly easy to default open mailto: links in Gmail. You can simply open a Gmail window and click on the gray double diamonds next to the bookmark star. Out pops a dialog asking if you want to allow, deny, or ignore. If you choose “allow” or “deny” then either way, you’re set.

If you later change your mind, such as if you realize you do want to open mailto: links in Gmail, then you can change it. Type “chrome://settings/handlers” in the location bar and choose (or remove) gmail as your mail handler.

If you use Firefox, it’s also easy. Open the preferences (“Command + ,”) and click the “Applications” tab. Scroll through the “Content Type” until you find “mailto” and then choose your default “Action” from the right column.

smart phone batteries

Some tips on prolonging battery life, From  NYTimes

People looking to preserve their batteries should make sure their phones don’t become overheated, Mr. Campos advised, because high temperatures further excite the lithium-ion in batteries, leading to even quicker deterioration.
Apple’s website says temperatures above 95 degrees Fahrenheit (or 35 Celsius) can “permanently damage battery capacity.”
Both Mr. Zeine and Mr. Campos noted that given the constant demand for new cellphones, charging overnight might not be a point of great concern for many people.
“All this actually doesn’t make a huge difference for consumers,” Mr. Campos said, citing a 2015 Gallup survey showing that 44 percent of smartphone users planned to upgrade their devices as soon as their providers allowed it — usually after two years, about the length of time it takes for batteries to start showing signs of wear.

Windows 10 download & install

Having problems with some PC for Windows 10 Download:

Before anything else, you should check whether Windows Update has the ability to download and install update automatically. This takes a few simple steps:
  1. Open Windows Update by positioning the mouse pointer in the bottom right corner of the screen and then moving it up. After this click Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery.
  2. Next, click on "choose how updates get installed" and on the next page choose the relevant option under Important updates.
  3. From there choose "give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates" check box from under the Recommended updates section
  4. Under Microsoft Update then choose the "give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" check box and click "Apply."
  5. Open up Windows Explorer to view the files on your PC. Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete all the files that are in the folder (but don't delete the folder itself).
When you've done all of that, launch the Command Prompt in Administrator mode (you can do this by pressing the Windows Key on your keyboard and X, then select "Command Prompt (Admin)" from the menu that appears) and type in: wuauclt.exe/updatenow. With any luck your download should then begin and you'll be able to enjoy Windows 10.

If you're still having trouble installing Windows 10, here's some solutions. If you get the "Error: "Something Happened 0x80070005-0x90002" message during the Windows 10 installation process following steps:
  1. Disable all antivirus and firewalls running in your version of Windows
  2. Reset Windows Update by running Microsoft's FixIt tool
  3. If that doesn't work try the System Update Readiness tool from Microsoft.

Cloning a hard drive - Windows

My home PC is dying, want to clone the C drive,  from Lifehacker

What You'll Need

There are a number of different ways to go about this, but we've found this to be the easiest and most reliable method. Here's what you'll need:
  • Your current hard drive, with Windows installed. For simplicity's sake we'll call this drive—that is, the drive you're migrating from—your "current hard drive" throughout the tutorial.
  • A solid-state drive. This is the drive you'll be migrating to. To get a rough idea of how big it should be, head to your current drive, navigate to C:\Users\ and right-click on your user folder. Hit Properties, and mark down how much space that folder takes up. Head to My Computer and note how much space Drive C: has filled up, and subtract your user folder's size from C:'s total. That's how big your SSD needs to be, though I'd give yourself a good deal of wiggle room for future updates and new programs. We'll assume, for the purposes of this guide, that you've already installed your new hard drive and are ready to migrate your data.
  • A backup of all your data. Since you can't clone only part of a drive, you'll need to remove your music, movies, and other personal files from your current drive before migrating Windows to the SSD. That means you'll want to back up your data somewhere else—whether that be an external drive, a spare internal drive, or the cloud. Just make sure that data is safe and recoverable, since we'll be restoring it later on.
  • EaseUS Todo Backup Free. This is the program we'll be using to migrate your installation. It's easy to use, free, and it can clone partitions from a big drive to a smaller drive, which is crucial for this process (since your SSD is probably smaller than your current hard drive).

remove mail profile when Outlook wont open

The server address for our exchange server changed, but then you cant open Outlook on client computer.   To edit or remove bad profile:

Remove a profile

A profile consists of accounts, data files, and settings that specify where your email messages are saved.
  1. Exit Outlook.
  2. In Control Panel, click or double-click Mail.
    Where is Mail in Control Panel?
    Mail appears in different Control Panel locations depending on the version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, Control Panel view selected, and whether a 32- or 64-bit operating system or version of Outlook 2010 is installed.
    The easiest way to locate Mail is to open Control Panel in Windows, and then in the Search box at the top of window, type Mail. In Control Panel for Windows XP, type Mail in the Address box.
    NOTE:  The Mail icon appears after Outlook starts for the first time.
    The title bar of the Mail Setup dialog box contains the name of the current profile. To select a different existing profile, click Show Profiles, select the profile name, and then click Properties.
  3. Click Show Profiles.
  4. Select a profile.
  5. Click Remove.
NOTE:  Removing an email profile doesn’t remove your Outlook Data Files (.pst), so no data is lost.

Apple OS via bootable USB drive

What to be able to restore Apple OS for patrons (from Ars Technica):

Apple has actually included a terminal command that can create an install disk for you. Assuming that you have the OS X El Capitan installer in your Applications folder and you have a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)-formatted USB drive named "Untitled" mounted on the system, you can create an El Capitan install drive by typing the following command into the Terminal.

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

The command will erase the disk and copy the install files over. Give it some time, and your volume will soon be loaded up with not just the OS X installer but also an external recovery partition that may come in handy if your hard drive dies and you're away from an Internet connection.

iFrame tag scaling

I want to display an iFrame with a scaled version of a web page, use CSS to do the scaling:

<style>
#wrap { width: 600px; height: 390px; padding: 0; overflow: hidden; }
#frame { width: 800px; height: 520px; border: 1px solid black; }
#frame { zoom: 0.75; -moz-transform: scale(0.75); -moz-transform-origin: 0 0; }
</style>

From stackoverflow   and collaboration133
And can even scroll to a part of the web page:

#my-div
{
    width    : 400px;
    height   : 200px;
    overflow : hidden;
    position : relative;
}

#my-iframe
{
    position : absolute;
    top      : -100px;
    left     : -100px;
    width    : 1280px;
    height   : 1200px;
}

Here you have one DIV with dimensions 400x200px. Now by moving the IFRAME within it you can position it on the right place.

<div id="my-div"> <iframe src="http://www.example.com" id="my-iframe" scrolling="no"></iframe> </div>
